Pricing Plans for Managing Seasonal Deliveries by Dairy Cooperatives AgEcon
Ling, K. Charles.
This study develops a method to devise pricing plans for dairy cooperatives to recover costs of handling seasonal milk deliveries from producers and the cost of satisfying handlers' cyclical fluid demand. Based on analyses of hauling and manufacturing costs, charges against producers and handlers are formulated. Manufacturing cost is the major component of producer charges. Give-up charges against handlers are determined by the cooperative's manufacturing cost, while hauling cost is the main consideration in servicing handlers' day-to-day fluctuation of fluid demand.

A Reserve-Balancing Pool for Services by Dairy Cooperatives AgEcon
Ling, K. Charles.
The rationale for compensating dairy cooperatives for the costs incurred in balancing milk supply for the fluid market is examined. A reserve-balancing pool is proposed to facilitate deducting supply-balancing service credit from a marketwide producer pool and making payment to cooperatives for providing the services. The volume of necessary reserves maintained for the fluid market determines the size of the reserve-balancing pool. A dairy cooperative qualifies for pool payment based on the volume of milk delivered for fluid uses and on the volume of necessary reserves actually balanced. An alternative qualification is to allocate the volume of necessary reserves each cooperative has to balance according to a cooperative's market share of milk for fluid...

Seasonal and vertical variations of sinking particle fluxes in the West Caroline Basin ArchiMer
Kawahata, H; Yamamuro, M; Ohta, H.
A sediment trap experiment was carried out in the West Caroline Basin, located in the equatorial western Pacific between influences of the Asian monsoon and the open ocean. Annual mass flux at the shallow trap at Site 1 was 57.10 g m(-2)yr(-1). Generally, the higher flux of organic matter was associated with higher activities of biogenic opal-producing and carbonate-producing plankton communities. In addition, as the organic matter content increases, the organic carbon/carbonate carbon ratio shows a tendency to increase. Carbonate-producing plankton was predominant during periods 1 and 3 (May to July and November to the beginning of December), which could be due to limited silica supply to the euphotic zone. On the other hand, surface sea water was more...

Note sur les temps de recherches journaliers maximum des senneurs intertropicaux. OceanDocs
Fonteneau, A..
This document present the maximum daily duration of searching time by the purse seiners in intertropical areas. The daily duration of daylight varies according the latitude and season, and searching for tuna schools can be conducted only during this time (e.g. between the times of sunrise and of sunset). This maximum daily searching time should be routinely used and should preferably replace the constant 13 or 12 hours of standard daily searching time presently used for French and Spanish purse seiners in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.

PRACTICES USED BY DAIRY FARMERS TO REDUCE SEASONAL PRODUCTION VARIABILITY AgEcon
Washington, Andrew A.; Larson, Robert W., Jr.; Kilmer, Richard L..
Results of this study further support the effectiveness of the seasonal pricing plan in reducing seasonal production variability. Florida Dairy farmers were able to change factors that affect production in order to take advantage of the seasonal pricing plan and that farmers that chose not to participate were able to affect factors to increase production seasonality.

The Optimal Season Length for a Sugar Mill in the Australian Sugar Industry AgEcon
Beard, Rodney; Wegener, Malcolm K..
In this paper we present a model of the optimal crushing season length for sugar cane. The approach taken is to view the optimal season length problem as an optimal stopping problem for both the Mill and a representative grower. We formulate the optimal stopping problems for both Mill and grower based on \real option" theory using Ito calculus. Because the interests of the Mill and growers do not coincide this results in a stochastic differential game of optimal stopping. We solve the model numerically using a finite difference algorithm.

Atividade reprodutiva de Scinax rizibilis (Bokermann) (Anura, Hylidae) na Floresta Atlântica, sudeste do Brasil Zoologia
Bastos,Rogério P; Haddad,Célio F. B.
The breeding activity of Scinax rizibilis (Bokermann, 1964) was observed in a temporary pond, in the municipality of Ribeirão Branco, in the Southern São Paulo State from February 1993 to January 1994 and November 1994 to February 1995. The reproductive season extended from September to February. Females were larger and heavier (after oviposition) than males. In the choras, the spatial distribution tended towards uniformity. The number of males and females in the chorus was positively correlated. However there was no correlation between the number of males and the estimation of the operational sex ratios. On average there were seven males for each female present in the chorus. The males were apparently selected by females.

Sazonalidade e horário de atividade de abelhas Euglossinae (Hymenoptera, Apidae), em florestas de terra firme na Amazônia Central Zoologia
Oliveira,Marcio Luiz de.
Euglossinae bee fauna of two areas of terra firme forest near Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil was compared. Over a twelve-month period collections were done fortnightly, between 7:00 a.m and 5:00 p.m, using traps with eight kinds of scent baits. The traps were placed in the understory and in tree crowns. The majority of species and specimens was most active between August-December, near the beginning of the rainy season in this region. The bees were most active from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., while air temperatures were between 24.5-27ºC, but there was a decline in this activity when air temperature varied above or below of this range. There were differences in the seasonality and in the daily activity patterns for the two areas studied but these differences were...

Coastal upwelling in the eastern Gulf of California ArchiMer
Lluch-cota, Salvador Emilio.
Understanding and quantifying upwelling is of great importance for marine resource management. Direct measurement of this process is extremely difficult and observed time-series do not exist. However, proxies are commonly derived from different data; most commonly wind-derived. A local wind-derived coastal upwelling index (CUI) is reported for the period 1970-1996 and is considered representative for the eastern central Gulf of California, an important fishing area where no proxies exist. The index is well related to pigment concentration distribution, surface water temperature, and population dynamics of important fish resources over the seasonal time-scale. There is a biological response to ENSO activity not reflected by this index, indicating that...

AN EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE FLORIDA COOPERATIVE'S SEASONAL PRICING PLAN ON SEASONAL PRODUCTION VARIABILITY AgEcon
Washington, Andrew A.; Lawson, Robert W., Jr.; Kilmer, Richard L..
From 1993 - 1995, Florida dairy cooperatives implemented a seasonal pricing plan in an attempt to decrease the variability in seasonal production. Farmers that participated in the seasonal pricing plan were able to reduce seasonality in each year when compared to 1992 by as much as 20 percent. For farmers that did not participate, seasonality increased in each year by as much as 32 percent. Overall, the seasonal pricing plan was effective in reducing seasonality for those farmers that chose to participate in the plan and that its limited short-run success was the result of seasonality increases by non-participating farms.

CHANGING SEASONAL PATTERNS IN THE POULTRY MARKET AgEcon
Ji, Wen.
The role of seasonality in modeling agricultural markets is well recognized. However, traditional approaches to account for seasonality assume that seasonal pattern is constant, even though some evidence of changing seasonal pattern exists in the literature. This paper seeks to explore the impact of incorporating changing seasonal pattern into poultry market modeling. Keywords: seasonality, trigonometric variable, seasonal frequency.

AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF THE DEMAND FOR WHOLESALE PORK PRIMALS: SEASONALITY AND STRUCTURAL CHANGE AgEcon
Parcell, Joseph L..
A set of inverse wholesale pork primal demand models were estimated to estimate wholesale pork primal own-quantity flexibility's, to determine seasonal price fluctuations, and to examine whether the flexibility's have changed in absolute magnitude over time. Results of this analysis indicate that there is the own-quantity flexibility for some primals differences by season with in the year. Additionally, it was determined that the own-quantity flexibility increased in magnitude (absolute value) over time for some of the primal cuts evaluated here. However, for Hams and Boston Butt the own-flexibility was either unchanged or increased over the period analyzed. Increased cold storage stocks for these primals may have been used to offset the price decline of...

MODELOS DE SÉRIES TEMPORAIS APLICADOS À SÉRIE DOS ÍNDICES DE PREÇOS AO CONSUMIDOR NA REGIÃO DE LAVRAS, MG, NO PERÍODO DE 1992 A 1999 AgEcon
Silva, Roberta Bessa Veloso; Ferreira, Daniel Furtado; Safadi, Thelma.
This piece of work was carried out objectifying to adjust the time series models to the series of price indexes for the consumer ( PIC ) of Lavras MG. It aimed at verifying the occurrence of differences in trend as for the period which preceeded, as well as for the one which succeeded the Plano Real, and if there was a simple linear trend along with Plano Real ( 1994-1999 ) as well as if any seasonality occurred. It also objectified to comparing the series of both Lavras and the Federal District. It was verified that there was no trend along the whole series, nor there was any seasonality, notwithstanding the fact that a level change occurred, which was characterized as an intervention, rather than a trend. It was necessary to fit a model featuring an...

Factors affecting biochemical composition of seston in an eutrophic reservoir (Pampulha Reservoir, Belo Horizonte, MG BJB
BOËCHAT,I. G.; GIANI,A..
Sestonic biochemical composition (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates) may change with varying environmental fluctuations. These changes and the effects in the nutritional status of algae consists of an actual increasing source of interest. The aims of this work were to establish the relationship between biochemical composition of seston and 1) a range of physical, chemical and climatological factors, and 2) the natural fluctuation in the species composition in phytoplankton assemblages of the Pampulha Reservoir, an urban eutrophic lake located in Belo Horizonte, MG. Seasonal changes in the biochemical composition were observed in this study. None of the considered abiotic factors alone seem to affect the biochemical composition. So the effects could only...

Flow structure and seasonalityin the Hebridean slope current ArchiMer
Souza, Aj; Simpson, Jh; Harikrishnan, M; Malarkey, J.
The intensity, structure and variability of the slope current have been determined from 16 months of observations with Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) and conventional current meters on a cross-slope section at the Hebridean shelf edge during the Shelf Edge Study (SES) programme. After removal of the tidal signals, the mean flow over the upper slope is found to be closely parallel to the topography with speeds of . 20 cmEs.1. The flow extends down to a depth of 500 m and is predominantly barotropic, especially in winter when the flow is practically uniform between 350 m and the surface. In summer, there is a significant baroclinic component with a pronounced maximum in current at a depth of about 200 m but more than 80% of the kinetic energy is...
